The Story
A colony ship on course for another world is thrown off course and crash-lands on an unknown planet. With communications cut and escape unlikely, the survivors must decide whether to focus on repairing the ship or settling permanently.
As the group explores the planet, they encounter a harsh but habitable world with strange weather, unfamiliar life, and unsettling psychic phenomena tied to the environment. Internal tensions grow between crew and colonists, and the pressures of survival reshape their priorities, relationships, and social rules.
The novel follows the emergence of a new settlement as the survivors adapt to the planet and begin laying the groundwork for a future society. It functions as an origins story for the wider series, showing how the earliest human presence on Darkover begins and how its lasting patterns take shape.
