More about this book

The Story

Helen and Edgar are a middle-class married couple whose uneasy domestic routine is disrupted by Edgar’s secret work in the attic. While Helen has been occupied with adult education classes and housework, Edgar has been locked away on a private invention that he keeps hidden from her.

When Helen finally gains access to the attic laboratory, she discovers that Edgar has been building an artificial companion. Her reaction is not passive: she steals the invention, hides it, and forces Edgar into a new arrangement that exposes how differently they each imagine intimacy, satisfaction, and partnership.

What follows is an increasingly chaotic standoff involving marital resentment, bargaining, and escalating comic disorder. The story uses the secret invention to push the couple into a final collision of desire, power, and absurdity.
