More about this book

The Story

In a future where sunlight has become deadly to most mammals, humans survive underground and venture out only at night. Ten-year-old Elvie lives with Flora, a scientist who has created a temporary medicine from monarch butterfly scales that lets them move safely in daylight.

Together they travel across the western United States, following monarch migration routes while Flora works toward a lasting vaccine. Along the way, they face natural hazards, scarce resources, and other survivors who may help them or threaten them.

Elvie’s journal entries and field notes weave through the comic, adding observations about nature, navigation, and survival. The story combines a travel quest with scientific learning, as the pair try to protect themselves and find a way to share a cure with others.
