Elsewhere

Vera grows up in an isolated mountain community where the outside world is simply “Elsewhere,” and where mothers sometimes vanish in a phenomenon the town calls an affliction. Her mother disappeared when Vera was young, and as she grows toward marriage and motherhood, she learns the town’s rituals, judgments, and beliefs about why some women are taken.

When Vera becomes a mother herself, the fear of disappearing intensifies. The story follows her through girlhood, adulthood, and domestic life as she watches how the community scrutinizes mothers, strangers, and anyone who seems to challenge the town’s customs. A visitor from elsewhere unsettles the town and Vera’s understanding of her world.

As Vera’s sense of self and fate comes under pressure, the novel turns toward questions of whether she can remain in the life laid out for her or choose another path. The narrative stays focused on Vera’s inner experience, the town’s traditions, and the uneasy mystery at the center of the mothers’ disappearances.
