In a near-future United States, anger over politics, class, gender, race, and culture builds toward a sudden upheaval. A mysterious book and a public list of enemies help drive a revolutionary movement that targets politicians, academics, journalists, and other perceived elites.

After the upheaval, the country is reorganized into separate territories shaped by identity and ideology, with different groups forced into distinct new social orders. The narrative follows multiple characters across these shifting spaces as power changes hands and new rules reshape everyday life.

The story moves in fragments, with shifting viewpoints, flashbacks, and delayed explanations of how the revolution began and how the new order functions. As the world settles into its distorted divisions, the novel explores the consequences of separatism, propaganda, violence, and the fantasies that helped create the upheaval.
