The Story
Tess, the sister and heir of a human noble raised under alien rule, travels toward a planet in her brother’s domain and becomes tangled in a hidden political scheme. Cut off from easy contact with her brother, she is forced to keep moving and make sense of a world that is not what it first appears.
Her path leads her into the Jaran, nomadic horse-riding people with their own laws, gender roles, loyalties, and internal power struggles. Tess has to learn their language, customs, and social codes while trying to survive their landscape and understand the larger forces moving around them.
As Tess is drawn deeper into Jaran life, she forms friendships, alliances, and a complicated romantic attachment to a charismatic leader. The story unfolds through cultural immersion, political tension, and personal change, while larger interstellar consequences remain in the background and open into later books.
