A misfit hybrid creature in a secret pet lab leads fellow rejects on a risky escape toward freedom and self-acceptance.
First published 2020
The Story
Deep beneath a pet store, Barnabus lives in a lab as one of the Failed Projects: creatures made to become perfect pets but judged not good enough. Kept in bell jars with other misfits, he hears stories about the world above and begins to long for freedom.
When the threat of being recycled becomes real, Barnabus and the other Failed Projects decide to escape. Their journey is shaped by teamwork, danger, and the need to help one another survive while they move through the hidden world below and beyond the lab.
As the group reaches the outside world, they must choose what matters most: perfection or belonging, safety or freedom. The story follows their efforts to find a place where they can live together as themselves, with the ending emphasizing acceptance, cooperation, and a hard-won sense of home.
