The Story
With the war over but unresolved, the story shifts away from battlefield conflict and into the aftermath of loss, political maneuvering, and new uncertainty. Cheerwell Maker is sent on a diplomatic mission to the distant city of Khanaphes while Thalric moves through a fragile power situation in the Empire.
Khanaphes becomes the center of the narrative: an ancient, mysterious city with restrictive customs, hidden authority, and signs that its people and history are not what they first seem. As the delegation investigates, rival factions converge, the danger rises, and long-standing tensions between key characters continue to evolve.
The book builds toward a siege and a series of revelations that connect personal grief, shifting loyalties, and the city’s buried secrets. It is a more focused, contained installment than the earlier war-driven volumes, but still ties its mystery and character arcs back into the larger series world.
