The Story
On the generation ship Jacob's Ladder, society has fractured into rival houses and castes while the ship's artificial intelligences have split into competing angelic personalities. The human inhabitants live in a feudal, myth-shaped world that seems fantastic even though its foundations are advanced technology, genetic modification, and nanotech.
The story begins when Rien, a servant, is assigned to care for Perceval, a captured warrior whose wings have been cut off. As they learn more about each other, they discover hidden family ties and become caught in larger struggles involving house politics, memory absorption, and the ambitions of those who want to control the ship and the war brewing aboard it.
Rien and Perceval set out across the decaying ship to escape danger, prevent wider conflict, and confront the forces manipulating their lives. Their journey unfolds alongside the competing agendas of the ship's fragmented AI system and the looming threat posed by the dying stars outside the ship.
