Strangeways

Emily is a working waitress in a world where alien newcomers have blended into society without open violence. The men on Earth are dying young, the women are overburdened, and Emily senses that something about the visitors is deeply wrong even when no one else seems alarmed.

When she meets Phi, an alien drawn to her, their connection quickly becomes intimate and unsettling. He is attentive, protective, and persuasive, but his interest is tied to a larger plan of assimilation that blurs desire, consent, and control.

As the relationship deepens, Emily’s perception of reality becomes increasingly uncertain. The story follows her through a short, high-heat, suspenseful arc toward a conclusion that can read as either troublingly coercive or strangely happy, depending on how the reader weighs Phi’s influence and Emily’s agency.
