After earlier victories, Minalan sets out on a summer expedition to Anghysbel, a lost land in the far north where magic does not work. He hopes to uncover answers hidden in ancient ruins and secure knowledge powerful enough to help save the world.

The journey is dangerous from the start: poisonous wastes, a short summer window, goblin pursuit, and the strain of traveling without magic. Along the way, Minalan travels with allies including his wife, encounters forgotten peoples and creatures, and learns that Anghysbel holds multiple hidden communities, old outposts, and long-buried history.
