More about this book

The Story

Sirius, a celestial being linked to the Dog Star, is accused of murder and punished by being sent to Earth in the body of a puppy. As he grows into his dog body, he must survive ordinary danger, remember who he is, and search for the lost object tied to his case.

On Earth, Sirius is rescued by Kathleen, a lonely Irish girl living with difficult relatives during a tense historical backdrop. The two form a deep bond while Sirius experiences the world through dog senses, meets other animals and people, and slowly pieces together both the mystery and his own divided nature.

As the celestial and earthly threads come together, the story moves toward a difficult reckoning with guilt, innocence, love, and loss. The ending is repeatedly described as bittersweet, with Sirius’s fate and Kathleen’s future both carrying emotional weight rather than a simple tidy resolution.
