Cettie lives in poverty below the clouds, among hunger, ghosts, and harsh labor. When a powerful man takes her into his sky manor, she gains a chance at a new life, but the household and the world above are not welcoming.

Sera lives high above in privilege, isolated inside her family’s power and increasingly frustrated by the limits placed on her life. Though she seems to have everything, she longs for freedom, knowledge, and contact with the world below.

As the two girls move toward changes neither fully understands, the mysteries of their society, their own gifts, and the social order around them begin to converge. Their separate paths are building toward a larger upheaval that may alter both worlds.
